Tinnitus Compensation Calculator
A tinnitus compensation compensation calculator could help you with getting a better idea of the compensation that could be awarded. Our compensation calculator works by asking you questions about the accident you were involved in and the severity of the injuries you suffered. The figures our calculator uses are from the Judicial College Guidelines (JCG).
The JCG is a document that lists different injuries and illnesses alongside guideline compensation brackets for each. In the table below we have used some of the JCG’s entries regarding deafness and tinnitus
Please note that the first row is not from the JCG. All figures are for guidance only and may not be relevant to your claim.
| INJURY | JCG COMPENSATION | NOTES |
|---|---|---|
| Several Injuries at a Severe Level with Special Damages | Up to £500,000+ | Compensation plus special damages such as the cost of hearing aids, lost earnings and other medical expenses. |
| Total Deafness | £110,750 to £133,810 | Compensation will be impacted if a speech deficit or tinnitus is present. |
| Total Loss of Hearing in One Ear | £38,210 to £55,570 | Compensation will vary based on the presence of tinnitus, headaches, or dizziness. |

How Is Compensation For Tinnitus Calculated?
Compensation for tinnitus is calculated by assessing the pain and suffering you have endured, and whether you also suffered any financial losses.
Examples of factors that could be taken into consideration when compensation is being calculated include:
- Pain and suffering – i.e., how much physical and psychological pain and suffering your tinnitus has caused you.
- How an injury has impacted your life – for example, if you developed severe tinnitus that meant you had to stop working.
- If multiple injuries were suffered – in addition to tinnitus you may have suffered a soft tissue injury in your back or a fractured wrist.
- What financial losses have been suffered – in the next sections, we provide you with some examples.

Special Damages In Tinnitus Compensation Amounts
Special damages in tinnitus compensation amounts could be awarded for any associated financial losses you have suffered, such as lost earnings and medical expenses.
Below, we expand on the types of financial losses you could claim for.
Current And Future Loss Of Income
Sometimes, severe tinnitus can mean you have to stop working, either for a temporary amount of time or permanently. If you can prove that your tinnitus is why you cannot work now or in the future, causing loss of earnings, you can likely claim special damages compensation to make up for this shortfall. You will need payslips to prove your income level.
Medical Expenses
If you require private medical assistance for your mild tinnitus, moderate tinnitus, or severe tinnitus, you may be offered a hearing aid or another medical device to help.
Costs Of Care
If you have multiple severe injuries in addition to tinnitus, or tinnitus at a high level, you could receive care cost compensation. These could be costs incurred from a private care company or if a loved one had to take time off work to look after you. Invoices and a note of hours worked are helpful when claiming care costs.
Rehabilitation
Your tinnitus may require private rehabilitation using a combination of sound therapy and counselling, which special damages compensation could cover entirely or partially.
Travel Expenses
If your tinnitus has led to hearing loss, you may be unable to drive or use public transportation safely when attending medical appointments. Special damages compensation can pay for taxi costs where relevant and necessary.
This is not an exhaustive list. Please consult our advisors if you have questions about special damages or how to use out tinnitus compensation calculator.

How Can I Prove Fault In A Tinnitus Compensation Claim?
To prove fault in a tinnitus compensation claim, you need evidence such as CCTV footage and accident reports. We’ve included some key examples of evidence for tinnitus claims below:
- CCTV footage of the accident that caused your tinnitus.
- Accident reports, where necessary.
- Police reports, where necessary.
- Medical evidence like your medical records to show any diagnoses you have and any treatment you have received.

Is There A Tinnitus Compensation Claim Time Limit?
The tinnitus compensation claim time limit is 3 years running from the date of the accident, as per the Limitation Act 1980.
There are also exceptions to the time limit. These are:
- Claimants under 18 cannot claim themselves. They will have 3 years from their 18th birthday to begin the claiming process.
- Claimants lacking the mental capacity to claim will have the time limit suspended. It will only begin if they regain this capacity and run from this date.
In both instances where the claimant is unable to make their own claim, a litigation friend could do so on their behalf.
Unsure if you’re within the time limit? No worries – simply reach out to an advisor today to discuss your case.
